The Liberty Cap Mushroom
The Liberty Cap mushroom has a slender stem that is yellowish-brown in color. The heights of these mushrooms range between 1 3/4″ and five 1/2″. He was laughing wildly and hysterically, but not even his dad or mom could calm him down. The doctors observed Edward’s dilated pupils and concluded that he was not making any sense in his speech.
Any fungus that contains psilocin or psilocybin is controlled in the UK. Therefore, liberty caps are illegal in the UK and their cultivation, possession or sale is controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. When young, the stems are light coloured and slowly turn more yellowy-brown as they age.
History of Magic Mushrooms
• The Liberty Cap mushroom is also known as a magic mushroom. The flesh of Liberty Cap mushrooms contains the psychoactive compounds ofpsilocybin. The most common side effect is nausea, which can be avoided by eating them in moderation and taking food with them. If you have never taken psilocybin before, start with only a small amount until you know how your body will react to it. Some people experience headaches or dizziness after psilocybin mushroom ingestion.

Beginning in the 19th century, this humble little mushroom was starting to be identified by its common name, the liberty cap. Mordecai Cooke’s 1871 handbook referred to this mushroom as the “cap of liberty,” which can be tied to the cap worn by freed Roman enslaved people. It is named for the ancient region of Phrygia, located in modern-day Turkey (2). Taking a spore print is simple to do, and can aid in identification. Examination of spore print coloration should never be relied on as a standalone feature of identification, but rather to supplement other features of identification.
In the first two examples below, the caps are dry yet still dark in colour. In the second two examples, the caps are more rounded than pointy and lack distinctive nipples. If you don’t plan to use the mushrooms later, drying them is a common method for long-term storage. Once dried, liberty caps are more potent per gram than their fresh counterparts because water weight has been removed. Conocybe species, particularly Conocybe tenera, are small brown mushrooms that can resemble liberty caps at first glance. They grow in similar environments, such as grassy fields and lawns, and feature a slender stem and small cap.

When taken in large amounts, they may cause severe hallucinations and confusion. However, they are indigenous to Europe with distribution in Germany, Greece, Hungary, Estonia, Finland, France, Spain, Slovakia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. In the US, the liberty caps can be found in the Pacific Northwest and on the Cascade mountains’ western side. In Canada, they are located in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and New Brunswick. The scientific name for these mushrooms is psilocybe semilanceata.
The History Of Liberty Caps
Fungi foragers are justifiably concerned about mistaking P. semilanceata for deadly poisonous species such as the death cap, Amanita phalloides. This mushroom is responsible for around 90% of mushroom-related deaths globally. Fortunately, these species are highly distinct from each other, differing markedly in both their appearances and habitat preferences. However, around 2% of fungi species are considered truly poisonous globally, and might make you sick to varying degrees—anything from mild nausea to more serious, but non-fatal gastric disturbance.
As the spores mature the gills turn a more purple or black color. The liberty cap stem is usually between 2 and 4 inches in height and 0.04 to 0.14 inches in diameter. It’s a cream color and can have a blue tinge near the base of the stem. The stem is very slender and can be wavy, but its fibrous nature makes it quite strong unlike that of lookalikes.
Local parks, common recreational areas, race tracks, woodland and country paths are all potential growing spots. When liberty caps are moist, it’s possible to peel a very thin transparent jelly skin. This is not a common feature of mushrooms, so makes a good identifier of libs.
How To Identify Liberty Caps (And Avoid Lookalikes)
Liberty caps vary in color and are hygrophanous, which means they can appear to change color and transparency depending on the level of moisture in their environment. This is one reason why the mushroom’s fruit bodies may change color when moist and appear dull when dried out. Because of this, they can appear chestnut brown and dry to a light tan. The gills of a liberty cap mushroom move from a brownish color to purple-brown; spores can also be a dark purple-brown color. Like all Psilocybes, P. semilanceata is saprophytic, with their mycelium feeding on decaying grass roots, and is only ever found in association with grasses. While P. semilanceata will fruit in manure-rich grasslands, it will never be found fruiting directly from dung.
